Recent data suggests, however, that only half of children diagnosed with asthma actually get tested for seasonal allergies. Dermatologist Mitchel Goldman, on a segment of “Your Health” on Fox 5 News, San Diego, discussed the issue of seasonal allergies and its effect on adults and children alike. What causes seasonal allergies? Each season different species of plants come into flower. These flowering plants produce pollen that can be carried in the air for miles. These pollens are the source of seasonal allergies. One of the most common symptoms (and one that is easily noticeable in children) is the itchy, watery eyes that often signal seasonal allergies. Pollen becomes trapped between the eye and eyelid when we blink, causing irritation. It has been defined by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute as a common chronic disorder of the airways that is complex and characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, airflow obstruction, bronchial hyperresponsiveness (bronchospasm), and an underlying inflammation.
